Evaluations

Divine Rape:
Coercion, Consumption and Colonialism
First Year Seminar 119
Fall 1998     Gettysburg College

1.  WEEKLY ELECTRONIC RESPONSES

Every week, each student must post a brief (250-500 words) but insightful response to the questions issued in the Divine Rape electronic forum.  You may find the forum at the following Internet address:

http://www.gettysburg.edu/calendars/forums/divinerape/wwwboard.html

Comments will be evaluated pass or fail.  In addition, each week every student should read and respond to the comments of two other students;  use the ``follow-up" function of the electronic forum.  The weekly electronic responses will account for twenty percent of the total grade.

2.EXAMS

There will be two exams.  All exams will be completed outside the classroom.  Questions will evaluate the student's ability to abstract and analyze the materials discussed in class.  The two exams will account for thirty percent of the total grade.  The Mid-term exam is due on October 14, 1998; and your final exam is scheduled to be presented on December 14, 1998, no later than 4:30 p.m.

3.CLASS PARTICIPATION

Class participation and attendance will be considered absolutely fundamental in evaluating the successful completion of the course.  Students will be responsible for moderating at least one session of the seminars. In addition, short reading comprehension exercises will be administered if necessary.  The class participation grade will account for ten percent of the total grade.

4.FINAL PAPER

Participants of the course will be required to present a final paper.  Each student should
(1) have
selected the theme by the third week of the course; i.e., by September 11, 1998.  (2) Members of the seminar are required to demonstrate their research ability in the creation of an annotated bibliography.  Your annotated bibliography is due on October 21, 1998.
(3) After you have completed the preliminary bibliography you will share with the class your topic and preliminary findings. There will be a sign-up sheet for the presentations schedule.  (4)  You will also hand-in the outline of your final paper, including your introductory page, two weeks before the final paper is due, i.e., November 30, 1998.

(THE PAPER)  Finally you will submit your term paper  [on the last day of classes.]  Each one of the first four preliminary research steps accounts for five percent of the grade, and the final paper accounts for twenty percent.  Thus the entire research process accounts for forty percent of the total grade.
