The FITS HEADER EDITOR ---------------------- The Fits Header Editor is a program developed to modify the header of a fits (or fts) format image file. It requires the Windows operating system. Most of the operational aspects of the program can be understood by reading the Help screens from within the program itself. The rest can be figured out by examining the sample files and using the program. The Fits Header Editor (c) 1994 by Michael B. Hayden is shareware. Commercial use of this product, or incorporation of this product, or any portion of this product in another product is prohibited without written agreement from the author. See important details in ABOUT... in the main screen of the Fits Header Editor. As shareware, you may distribute this software package freely, as long as you distribute the whole thing, and haven't modified it, and don't money on it. INSTALLATION: ------------- Insert the distribution disk in drive a (or b) In the Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu Type a:setup (or b:setup) and press Enter MANIFEST -------- The distribution disk contains the following files: SETUP EXE 14848 10-21-92 Windows setup and installation program SETUP LST 54 05-12-94 A file needed by SETUP.EXE SETUPKIT DLL 7008 10-21-92 A file needed by SETUP.EXE 940506 EXE 21009 05-08-94 A file needed by SETUP.EXE FH EXE 124016 05-05-94 The Fits Header Editor program VBRUN200 DLL 356992 10-21-92 A file needed by FH.EXE VER DL_ 9008 03-10-92 A file needed by FH.EXE CMDIALOG VBX 18400 10-21-92 A file needed by FH.EXE DEFAULT KWD 715 04-19-94 The default keyword file (see below) SAMPLE TXT 193 04-27-94 A sample input text file (see below) GASSENDI FTS 66240 04-12-94 An image file (see below) SAMPLE OUT 1489 04-28-94 A sample log file (see below) README 1ST 4097 05-12-94 The document you are reading DESCRIPTION OF INPUT AND OUTPUT FILES: -------------------------------------- DEFAULT.KWD An ASCII text file, of a particular syntactic structure which is automatically read every time the Fits Header Editor program is run. It establishes the particular header keyword lines that are written to a log file of the general form of SAMPLE.OUT in a logging operation. Examine the file itself for details. SAMPLE.TXT An ASCII text file. An example of the kind of file the Fits Header Editor can read into a header being modified. Each line must not exceed 80 characters. The file may have any number of lines, but the number of lines imported into the header depend on the space available in the header. SAMPLE.OUT An example of the ASCII text file generated as a result of logging a header. It is a file of keyword lines (see DEFAULT.KWD) that represent a record of information extracted from the image file you are modifying. Each record is separated by the log filename, and the time, and date taken from your PC's system clock. GASSENDI.FTS A sample image file of a moon feature in fits format so you can experiment and learn the program. FINAL NOTES: ------------ Please be sure to read the HELP and ABOUT... screens available in the sign on screen of the Fits Header Editor. They are short, but they contain essential information. This software was developed on a 486/33 machine with 8MB and a supervga card supporting VESA extensions using Microsoft Visual Basic V2.0 Pro. It has been run on a number of VGA and supervga machines. If your machine will run Windows, it will probably run the Fits Header Editor. But it might not.
